The early 1.6 turbo petrol of the Insignia A (A16LET, 180 hp) runs a timing belt driven valvetrain, unlike the chain driven SIDI A16XHT. The replacement interval is 150,000 km, or 10 years up to MY 2010 and 6 years from MY 2011.

If the belt breaks, the engine is badly damaged inside. Most used cars are over 10 years old, and if there is no invoice for the belt change, the belt is due.

Do not confuse it with the A16XHT SIDI: there the chain is the question.

between 120,000 and 180,000 km

What to check

  • Check the engine code: A16LET is the timing belt; A16XHT is the chain
  • Ask for the timing belt replacement invoice: 150,000 km or 6 to 10 years (depending on model year)
  • If there is no documentation and the car is over 6 to 10 years old or above 150,000 km, count on a belt change

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
