The same layout as in the naturally aspirated FSI, only in the turbocharged 2.0: the high pressure fuel pump is driven by the camshaft through a flat cam follower that relies on an oil film. The follower can wear through, and if it holes, it takes the camshaft lobe with it: the repair then includes the cylinder head. While driving you get hesitation under acceleration, stalling, and a low fuel pressure fault code. The follower can be removed and judged by eye, and that takes about ten minutes.
What to check
- Ask when the cam follower was last inspected: this is routine maintenance on this engine
- Ask for an invoice for the replacement; the follower sits under the high pressure pump and takes ten minutes to remove
- On the test drive under load watch for hesitation and power dropouts
