The fault
How you spot it
The connecting rod bearings wear from as little as 60,000 kilometres, which is early even for an engine of this output. The debris shows up as metal particles in the oil.
The symptoms are knocking from the engine block, a metallic sheen in the oil and the oil pressure warning light. If a bearing runs, the crankshaft is damaged too and the repair is an engine rebuild. The bearing shell size and clearance are the same on the N54 and the N55, with the same factory part numbers. The S55, however, manages the oil pressure better, so the trouble is rarer on it than on its smaller siblings.

Information, not an expert opinion
We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.
- A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
- A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
- You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
