The fault
How you spot it
According to the ADAC the W211 E-Class (2002 to 2009) has several faults that show up together.
- Up to 2003, engine management disturbances and leaking fuel lines on the diesels.
- Up to 2005, frequent battery drain (the onboard network manager software was updated in April 2005).
- Up to 2006, undersized ball joints and poor bushings, leading to heavy front and rear suspension wear.
- The flex discs (propshaft to gearbox and rear differential) are prone as well.
According to J. D. Power's measurement at the time, three year old W211 cars had 283 faults per 100 cars (industry average: 237).

How we know
Information, not an expert opinion
We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.
- A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
- A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
- You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
