The fault
How you spot it
The copper washer under the injectors of the five cylinder PD diesel (Transporter T5, Crafter I) gets crushed over time, and the seal lets go. First you hear a hissing, "coughing" noise from the engine bay when cold, then soot builds up around the injector. If it is not replaced at this point, the escaping combustion gas erodes the injector seat in the cylinder head: from then on comes cylinder head machining or replacement, far more expensive than the copper washer. The AXD is the earliest and weakest version of the family; the later BNZ/BPC is structurally strengthened. What accelerates it is almost always oil that does not meet the specification.

Information, not an expert opinion
We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.
- A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
- A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
- You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
