The fault
How you spot it
The steering moves with difficulty, with resistance and a quiet noise, and driving needs constant effort. The pump, the belt or the fluid level of the hydraulic power steering is behind it.
On a thirty year old car this is no surprise, but the repair is not negligible, and heavy steering can be a failure at the roadworthiness test too.
