Opel's post 2017 PSA platform 1.2 litre turbo petrol engines (PureTech / 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo, engine codes EB2*) run the timing belt in engine oil. According to the AUTO BILD and ADAC technical tables this design also appears in the Grandland, Crossland, Corsa F, Mokka B and Astra L ranges.

The belt swells, cracks or sheds material early: the particles clog the oil filter and the oil pickup, the oil pressure drops, and in the extreme case the belt breaks and the engine is badly damaged inside. Short trip use (fuel in the oil) and the wrong oil specification raise the risk.

A strengthened belt arrived in 2022; from 2023 the third generation 1.2 Turbo (and the 48V mild hybrid) switched to a chain, and this does not apply to those. Check whether the car has the belt or the post 2023 chain, and when the belt and the oil filter were last changed.

between 60,000 and 120,000 km

What to check

  • Establish the engine code or the VIN: EB2* means a wet belt; the 2023 and later chain or mild hybrid generation does not have this belt
  • Ask for a wet belt inspection (through the oil filler, with a gauge): a swollen belt means immediate replacement
  • Check the service book: the specified oil grade changed in mid 2021, and the short oil change interval matters

The fuel hose may have been incorrectly routed during assembly, causing it to come into contact with the engine belt pulley. This contact could damage the hose and result in fuel leaking or spraying into the engine compartment or surrounding areas, potentially leading to a fire if the fuel reaches hot surfaces. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

SR/01050/26Safety recallInjuries11 March 2026 · EU Safety Gate

The DV5R engine may experience a loss of power due to slippage of the water pump pulley. This slippage can cause misalignment of the timing belt, potentially resulting in engine shutdown. The sprocket of the water pump pulley may detach from the shaft, which can lead to the loss of parts on the road and increase the risk of accidents and injuries. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

SR/00365/26Safety recallFire21 January 2026 · EU Safety Gate

Vehicles fitted with a DV5R engine may experience a fuel leak. The non-conformity of the round shape on the cone of the common rail may cause the nut to loosen, resulting in the possibility of fuel leaking between the nut and the thread, leading to fuel vapours and fuel flow into the hot exhaust system. This may lead to a fire under the bonnet. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

SR/02659/25Safety recallInjuries3 July 2025 · EU Safety Gate

Due to oil carbonisation and high contact pressure, the 7 mm camshaft chain resistance can be reduced. This may cause the camshaft chain to break, leading to an engine failure. This can cause a loss of vehicle's control and increase the risk of accidents and injuries. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
