1.2 / 1.4 TSI (EA111): timing chain and chain tensioner

A few seconds of chain rattle on a cold start, later a permanent noise; the chain stretches and the tensioner does not hold it.

Applies to the engine CBZA, CBZB.

1.6 and 2.0 TDI: the belt driving the oil pump runs in oil and crumbles

On these engines the oil pump is driven by its own small toothed belt, and that belt runs in the hot engine oil.

The EGR valve and its cooler block up with soot and oily deposits; the particulate filter cannot regenerate on short urban trips.

1.6 TDI (EA189): the water pump driven off the timing belt

On this engine the water pump is driven by the timing belt, and the plastic impeller of the pump, along with its electronically controlled shut-off ring, is the weak point: the ring sticks, and the impeller separates from the shaft or disintegrates.

Applies to the engine CAYC.

DQ200 (7 speed dry DSG): mechatronics

A thin wall of the mechatronics valve body can crack, which causes a loss of pressure.

Applies to the transmission DQ200.

Dual mass flywheel: diesel

The internal springs of the flywheel tire, and the two discs knock against each other.

FSI direct injection: intake valve coking

With direct injection the fuel does not wash the intake valves: the petrol goes into the cylinder, not behind the valve.
