Known faults

3 important faults

critical1

The 1.0 MPI has a timing belt, not a chain. The factory interval is based on time: five years, and shorter on short urban trips. On a low mileage, ten year old car the mileage is not enough. This model is typically a city car, so the time runs out first. If the belt snaps, the engine is badly damaged.

What to check

  • Ask when the belt was changed: ask for the date, not the mileage
  • Work it out: have five years passed since the last change
  • Ask for the invoice; a service book stamp alone is not enough here

expensive2

On the manual gearbox cars the clutch can wear out as early as 60,000 to 80,000 km according to the reports, and on the early batches the reverse lockout was missing too, which speeds up gearbox wear. The symptom is a slipping clutch on a slope or under acceleration, or a bite point that moves high.

This car is a city car: many stops and starts, a lot of clutch load. 60,000 km is not a lot here: a buyer has to factor that into the price.

What to check

  • Pull away on a slope: that is where a slipping clutch shows itself
  • In fourth gear at low revs, apply throttle: do the revs flare
  • Watch how high the clutch pedal bites

According to the reports the electric fuel pump can fail after 70,000 to 90,000 km, and the risk rises if the car is regularly run with a low tank: the pump is cooled by the fuel.

The symptom is an engine that suddenly stops or will not start. The previous owner's habit causes real wear here.

What to check

  • When switching the ignition on, listen for the whirring from the tank
  • Ask whether the car tends to be run with a nearly empty tank
  • Watch for hesitation under load on the test drive

cheap repair2

On the 1.0 MPI the reports mention starting problems as early as around 20,000 km: the car starts with difficulty, jerks, and runs badly. Behind it is typically a faulty ignition coil or the fuel system.

It is a cheap part, but because of the nature of the fault it is easily confused with something more expensive: it is worth looking with a code reader before anybody proposes a bigger repair.

What to check

  • Cold start: watch how many revolutions it takes to catch
  • At idle watch for vibration and fluctuating revs
  • Query the misfire counters with a code reader

According to the reports the wheel bearings start droning at around 50,000 to 70,000 km. The noise gets louder with speed, and changes in corners: turning right loads the left bearing, and the other way round.

It is a cheap item, but it can appear on several wheels at once, and the car can fail the roadworthiness test on it.

What to check

  • At 60 to 90 km/h listen for the drone with the window open
  • Corner slowly in both directions: the noise getting louder identifies the side
  • With the car raised, grip the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
