Known faults

1 important faults

Most of this gearbox's faults are tied to the rear cover. Wear in the cover seat drops the oil pressure, the lower pressure makes the clutches slip, and the slipping wears them out.

The oil seals, the rubber-coated pistons and the brake bands have a short service life. The gearbox is relatively easy to repair, and many jobs do not even need it removed.

What to check

  • Pull away and accelerate briskly: the shift must not slip and the revs must not flare
  • Rolling slowly, shift up and down: the change must not hesitate
  • Look at the rear of the gearbox from underneath: oil traces mean the cover is leaking

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
