8F35 automatic: weak planetary gear set, leaks at the driveshafts

The planetary gear sets in this gearbox are weak and their service life is short: with vigorous driving the planetary set can fail after as little as 100,000 km.

Oil leaks along the driveshafts and through the electrical connector are common. The gearbox sometimes thumps when coming out of Park, and can even jam. The remaining complaints concern control unit glitches, which were addressed with software updates.

What to check

  • Come out of Park several times: there must be no thump and the lever must not jam
  • Accelerate briskly: the shift must not slip and there must be no thump between gears
  • Look where the driveshafts come out and at the gearbox connector: oil traces mean a leak

6F15 automatic: delayed first gear, oil that dirties quickly

On early units first gear engages late. In most cases a software update solved it, but some also needed a new valve body.
