The navigation and entertainment system freezes or restarts, and smaller electrical faults appear alongside it. The hourly rate for fault finding makes up the bigger part of the bill. A software update resolves many cases.

  • Switch the system on and try everything: radio, Bluetooth, reversing camera, navigation
  • Leave it running for ten minutes and watch whether it freezes or restarts

The fuel flap will not open: cable and lock mechanism

The release mechanism of the fuel filler flap sticks: pressing the button does not pop the flap, or only after tapping it. It appears between 60,000 and 100,000 km. The cause is a worn actuator or a corroded, frozen cable. In winter the cable can freeze, and the car cannot be refuelled.

What to check

  • Open and close the fuel flap several times: does it open without binding
  • Watch whether the flap has to be pressed or tapped to open
  • Look at the corrosion around the flap and the lock

Weak heating: thermostat and a blocked cooling circuit

The heating warms up slowly or unevenly, and the temperature gauge behaves unusually. The cause is a stuck thermostat or old, deposit laden coolant. The water pump module often leaks as well.

What to check

  • After a cold start time how long it takes for the heating to warm up
  • Watch the temperature gauge in traffic and on the open road
  • Check the colour and level of the coolant in the expansion tank
