The DSG can jerk when pulling away as early as 15,000 km, shift late or harshly, and sometimes not change at all. The second wave comes between 60,000 and 80,000 km. In the What Car? survey 44 per cent of owners reported some kind of fault, and the gearbox is among the common faults too.

The DSG jerks in slow, crawling traffic, and it does not show on a main road.

What to check

  • Crawl with it: the jerking appears between 5 and 20 km/h, not on the motorway
  • Stop and pull away at least ten times in a row
  • Watch how long it takes to engage reverse and first with the car standing

comfort1

The powered fuel flap does not open or does not close, regardless of mileage, even on a new car. It gets in the way of refuelling.

What to check

  • Open and close the fuel flap at least three times in a row
  • Try it with the central locking locked and unlocked too
  • Ask whether a fuel flap motor has been replaced

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
