The DSG can jerk when pulling away as early as 15,000 km, shift late or harshly, and sometimes not change at all. The second wave comes between 60,000 and 80,000 km. In the What Car? survey 44 per cent of owners reported some kind of fault, and the gearbox is among the common faults too.

The DSG jerks in slow, crawling traffic, and it does not show on a main road.
What to check
- Crawl with it: the jerking appears between 5 and 20 km/h, not on the motorway
- Stop and pull away at least ten times in a row
- Watch how long it takes to engage reverse and first with the car standing
