In the Euro 6 diesel Tourans from 2016 two parts of the SCR (AdBlue) system typically fail: the tank level sensor (when the dash reads 0.0 mm or an empty tank with a full tank), and the tank heater, which gives up in winter. Both lead to the same place: the car starts a countdown, and at the end of the countdown it will not start. This is not a fault you can postpone, because the system shuts down under legal compulsion, and the tank is replaced from under the floor.

What to check

  • Switch the ignition on and see what AdBlue range the trip computer shows
  • Ask specifically whether there has been an AdBlue warning or a countdown
  • With a code reader check the SCR faults in the engine control unit (stored faults too)

The drains inside the doors block up, and the water leaves not outwards but through the sill into the footwell. It goes unnoticed for a long time, because it collects in the foam under the carpet. By the time it gives off a smell, the connectors running in the floor are already corroding. Most of the electronics are under the third row, so look at the carpet there.

What to check

  • Lift the carpet at all four doors and press the foam
  • Open the doors and look at the drain holes at the bottom: are they blocked
  • Look at the storage under the third row of seats and the spare wheel tray

In Tourans built between 2015 and 2018 with a panoramic roof, a short circuit can develop in the LED lighting module of the roof. The maker issued a recall for it. Carrying out the recall is tied to the VIN and free of charge: if the previous owner did not take it in, it can still be done afterwards.

What to check

  • Check whether the car has a panoramic roof at all
  • Ask the dealer by VIN for any open recalls
  • Switch the roof lighting on, and watch whether it flickers or smells

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
