The engine does not accelerate cleanly and struggles on a climb. The cause is a clogged fuel system: an aged fuel filter, dirty injectors, or a saturated particulate filter.

The particulate filter does not burn off properly on short city runs and fills up gradually. On a van this is common, because it stops often and spends a lot of time manoeuvring.

What to check

  • Accelerate at full throttle: the engine must pull evenly, without hesitation
  • Ask for the service book and check when the fuel filter was last replaced
  • Have the particulate filter load read, along with the distance since the last regeneration

Regular heavy towing wears the clutch out early and the plate slips: the revs flare but the van does not accelerate, and there is a burnt smell.

The repair usually replaces the dual-mass flywheel along with the pressure plate and the disc, using a single-mass flywheel conversion kit, part number 2 031 018.

What to check

  • Pull away loaded on a slope: the revs must not flare ahead of the speed
  • In fourth or fifth from low speed, accelerate hard: slipping shows up here
  • Watch for a burnt smell after pulling away
2 more steps in the write-up

The downstream NOx sensor fails and the engine warning light comes on. The fault code is P2200.

The sensor measures the amount of nitrogen oxide, and the engine management uses it to control exhaust treatment. With a faulty sensor the management may cut power, and the vehicle can also fail its roadworthiness test.

What to check

  • After switching on the ignition, watch whether the engine warning light goes out
  • Have the fault codes read and look for P2200 among them
  • Ask whether the NOx sensor has already been replaced, and ask for the invoice
1 more steps in the write-up

cheap repair1

The rear brake pads wear out quickly because they sit misaligned when installed. A misaligned pad does not bear on its whole face, so it wears unevenly and fast.

The repair is to remove and correctly refit the pads on both sides.

What to check

  • Check the thickness of the rear pads on both sides: a big difference points at misalignment
  • Look at the brake disc face: an uneven wear pattern points the same way
  • Ask for the brake pad invoices and see how often they were replaced

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
