According to the reports the wheel bearings start droning at around 50,000 to 70,000 km. The noise gets louder with speed, and changes in corners: turning right loads the left bearing, and the other way round.

It is a cheap item, but it can appear on several wheels at once, and the car can fail the roadworthiness test on it.

What to check

  • At 60 to 90 km/h listen for the drone with the window open
  • Corner slowly in both directions: the noise getting louder identifies the side
  • With the car raised, grip the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
