What to watch for
The list covers the generation, the engines and the transmissions. Once you pick the version, only the faults that apply to it stay.
The EGR cooler cools the recirculated exhaust gas before it enters the intake again, and coolant flows through it while it does so.
Applies to the engine CAHA, CNHA.
Repair: 600–1,500 EUR
The balance shaft module drives the oil pump through a hexagonal shaft stub.
Applies to the engine CAGA, CAHA, CAHB and 2 more.
The common rail high-pressure pump is lubricated and cooled by the diesel itself, because the pump produces over 2,000 bar and has no separate lubrication circuit.
Applies to the engine CDUC.
Repair: 1,500–15,000 EUR
On these engines the oil pump is driven by its own small toothed belt, and that belt runs in the hot engine oil.
Applies to the engine CNHA.
Repair: 200–600 EUR
The timing chain of the longitudinal V6 diesel runs at the back of the engine, on the gearbox side, so replacing it means taking out the engine or the gearbox.
Applies to the engine CDUC, CLAB.
The continuously variable gearbox of the longitudinal engine Audis (Multitronic) is vulnerable from both the control unit and the drive chain side.
Applies to the transmission 0AW.
The EA888 engines built between 2008 and 2011 got a 1.5 mm oil scraper ring instead of a 2 mm one, and the 0.3 mm drain holes in that ring soot up and then block.
Applies to the engine CAEB, CDNB.
Repair: 2,000–5,000 EUR
The membrane of the crankcase breather regulates how much suction there is inside the engine.
Applies to the engine CAKA.
Repair: 80–400 EUR
11 more faults belong to this generation. On the version page, only the ones that apply stay.
The manufacturer fixes these for free at a franchised dealer. Ask with the VIN whether it was done. The list covers the whole generation. We did not filter it by model year. Some apply only to a narrower production window.

Common questions
2007–2015. The changeover year can fall in two generations. If the listing is from that year, look at the neighbour too.
No. It depends on the engine and the transmission too.
The fault list is.
We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.
