What to watch for
The list covers the generation, the engines and the transmissions. Once you pick the version, only the faults that apply to it stay.
Plastic guide rails hold the timing chain in place.
Applies to the engine B48B20, B48B20M1, B48B20O1.
Repair: 700–2,900 EUR
The high pressure pump of these common rail diesels (Bosch CP4) can fail while driving.
Applies to the engine N57D30, B47D20.
In these engines the water pump is not belt driven but has its own electric motor.
Applies to the engine B46B20O1, B48B20, B48B20M1 and 3 more.
In these diesels BMW put the timing chain at the back of the engine, on the gearbox side.
Applies to the engine N57D30.
The internal fins of the exhaust gas recirculation cooler crack over time, and glycol coolant leaks into the intake, where it mixes with soot.
Applies to the engine N57D30, B47D20, B57D30O0 and 3 more.
On the early model years the timing chain of the B47 stretches faster than intended.
Applies to the engine B47D20.
Repair: 1,200–4,500 EUR
The B47 replaced the N47, and the maker fixed the timing chain problem.
Applies to the engine B47D20, B57D30O0, B57D30O2 and 2 more.
The connecting rod and main bearings run out, and the cause is the factory oil pump: it is undersized and does not deliver enough oil volume at idle and at low revs.
Applies to the engine N57D30.
6 more faults belong to this generation. On the version page, only the ones that apply stay.
The manufacturer fixes these for free at a franchised dealer. Ask with the VIN whether it was done. The list covers the whole generation. We did not filter it by model year. Some apply only to a narrower production window.

SR/02180/26Safety recallFire7 July 2026 · EU Safety GateThe RSW22 starter with reinforced water tightness (RWT) may experience increased abrasion of the magnetic contact, causing deposits to build up at the lowest point inside the relay. These deposits may increase relay contact resistance, leading to starting failures or short circuits. If a short circuit occurs, either when attempting to start the vehicle or while driving due to vibration-related movement of the deposits, it could cause a thermal event and increase the risk of fire.
