In these diesels BMW put the timing chain at the back of the engine, on the gearbox side. The chain, the guides and the tensioner wear early. The symptom is a metallic rattle on a cold start that quietens once warm.

The engine or the gearbox has to come out for the replacement, so the labour is a multiple of the parts cost. If the chain breaks or jumps, the engine is badly damaged inside, and the repair is an engine rebuild.

The problem is worst on engines built between March 2007 and March 2011, and the ones before early 2009 are the worst of all. The maker handled it under a service campaign in several European markets, but in the United Kingdom there was no formal recall. "It was never recalled" does not mean the chain is fine.

According to the German technical press the fault affects the whole N47 series and every power output, inspection is advised from 100,000 km, and factory revisions closed the matter around 2013, so cars built after 2013 are in a significantly better position. Stretching is typically preceded by a distinct rattle.

between 100,000 and 200,000 km

What to check

  • Insist on a cold start: the car should stand overnight, and the seller must not start it before you arrive
  • At the moment of starting, stand behind the engine (on the gearbox side) and listen to the first 3 to 5 seconds
  • A metallic rattle from the back of the engine calls for immediate expert inspection: this is not "diesel noise"

The fastening of the swirl flaps in the intake works loose from the vibration of the engine, and a flap can come away. From there it gets through the intake into the cylinder, and takes the piston and the valves with it, so the cost of the repair ranges from the price of a flap to an engine rebuild. The older units with metal flaps are the most dangerous. The symptoms are a rough idle, a loss of power and occasional juddering, with the code P2015 in the fault memory. On the M47TU2 this is the most common case. Prevention comes in two forms. Either a reinforced flap is fitted, aluminium or assembled with thread-locking, or the flaps are taken out and blanking plates go in their place. The second is the more radical one and takes the risk to zero; many workshops recommend it, and the airflow does not suffer from it either.

above 120,000 km

What to check

  • Read the fault memory and look for the P2015 code
  • At idle watch for rough running, and while driving for occasional juddering
  • Ask whether the swirl flaps have been touched, and what was done with them
2 more steps in the write-up

The swirl flaps in the intake manifold are held by screws, and engine vibration can work them loose beyond 120,000 kilometres. A loose screw can come off and travel down the intake into a cylinder.

From there it destroys the piston and the valves, so the cost of the repair ranges from the price of a screw to an engine rebuild. The preventive measure is to check or remove the swirl flaps.

above 120,000 km

What to check

  • Ask whether the swirl flaps have been checked or removed, and ask for the invoice
  • At idle, watch the engine: uneven running can point at an intake fault
  • Accelerate: flat running and smoke point the same way

The timing chain stretches from 180,000 km, and the chain tensioner no longer holds it properly. The tensioner is hydraulic, and with cold oil at low oil pressure it does not react fast enough: on a cold start the chain goes slack for a moment, and that is when it can skip. If it skips, the valves and the pistons meet. Missed oil changes speed the process up, because dirty oil wears the chain and the sprockets. The symptom has two stages, and they do not mean the same thing. If it rattles for one or two seconds on a cold morning start and then goes quiet, the chain has already stretched but there is still time to act. If the rattling is audible with a warm engine as well, the chain is heavily stretched and the tensioner is working at its limit, and then it is not worth driving on. The chain runs at the rear of the engine, right at the bulkhead, so it is hard to reach, and on many diesels the whole engine has to come out for the replacement. The material itself is not expensive: the chain is 150 to 300 euro and the revised tensioner 80 to 150 euro. The labour makes up most of the cost.

above 180,000 km150–300 EUR

What to check

  • Start it on a fully cold engine in the morning and listen to the first seconds
  • Listen when warm as well: rattling with a warm engine is a serious sign
  • Ask whether the chain or the tensioner has been replaced, and ask for the invoice

In the ZF six speed automatic (BMW codes GA6HP19Z / GA6HP26Z) the electrical connector of the valve body control leaves the gearbox housing through a plastic sleeve. That sleeve and its seals age, and they let oil through.

The symptom is irregular shifting, a gear slipping at higher revs, limp mode, a drivetrain fault code and a message on the display. The cause is the same in each case: the leak drops the hydraulic pressure, and the valve body cannot close the clutches with enough force.

The sleeve can be replaced without removing the gearbox, you only have to drop the oil pan. If it leaks for a long time, the slipping clutch and the overheating pump take the inside of the gearbox with them, and from then on it is a rebuild. The factory calls the oil a lifetime fill, but in practice the sleeve wears out around 60,000 to 70,000 miles, roughly 100,000 to 115,000 km.

between 100,000 and 200,000 km

What to check

  • On a lift look at the right side of the gearbox housing, above the oil pan: a wet, oily connector is the characteristic picture
  • On the test drive watch the shifts cold and warm: jerking, delay, slipping at higher revs
  • Ask for a fault code read from the gearbox controller: gear ratio fault, pressure regulation

The turbo bearing is lubricated from the engine oil, and the most common cause of failure here is a lack of lubrication. Deposits form in the oil feed line, and because of that the bearing does not get enough oil. A missed oil change and poor quality oil speed the process up on their own as well. The symptoms are a whistling or howling noise on acceleration, a loss of power or limp mode, and black smoke from the exhaust. Replacing the turbo on its own is not enough: if the oil feed line is not cleaned or replaced, the new turbo goes the same way. Prevention is three things. An oil change at least every 15,000 km, better every 10,000, with oil approved to BMW Longlife-04. A check of the oil feed line. And not revving the engine right after a cold start, because the turbo needs oil pressure first. Above 180,000 km a preventive check pays for itself.

above 150,000 km

What to check

  • On acceleration listen for a whistling or howling noise from the turbo
  • Watch the exhaust under load, and whether it goes into limp mode
  • Ask whether the turbo has been replaced, and if so whether the oil feed line was cleaned

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
