Opel's post 2017 PSA platform 1.2 litre turbo petrol engines (PureTech / 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo, engine codes EB2*) run the timing belt in engine oil. According to the AUTO BILD and ADAC technical tables this design also appears in the Grandland, Crossland, Corsa F, Mokka B and Astra L ranges.

The belt swells, cracks or sheds material early: the particles clog the oil filter and the oil pickup, the oil pressure drops, and in the extreme case the belt breaks and the engine is badly damaged inside. Short trip use (fuel in the oil) and the wrong oil specification raise the risk.
A strengthened belt arrived in 2022; from 2023 the third generation 1.2 Turbo (and the 48V mild hybrid) switched to a chain, and this does not apply to those. Check whether the car has the belt or the post 2023 chain, and when the belt and the oil filter were last changed.
What to check
- Establish the engine code or the VIN: EB2* means a wet belt; the 2023 and later chain or mild hybrid generation does not have this belt
- Ask for a wet belt inspection (through the oil filler, with a gauge): a swollen belt means immediate replacement
- Check the service book: the specified oil grade changed in mid 2021, and the short oil change interval matters
