A machining fault is known on the Mk4 gearbox casing: material can pass through the bellhousing, and the gearbox oil runs onto the clutch. From then on the clutch slips, and the repair is not a clutch replacement: the gearbox and the clutch have to be replaced together.

The sign is a slipping clutch and an oil trace under the bellhousing.
What to check
- Pull away on a slope: that is where a slipping clutch shows itself
- Shine a light under the gearbox bellhousing: oil traces, dripping
- In fourth gear at low revs, apply throttle: do the revs flare
