Known faults

1 important faults

The EQC is covered by two separate official recalls, both about the high voltage battery, and both naming fire risk as the consequence.

1) Battery housing corrosion (2019 build). According to the EU alert the corrosion protection of the housing may be inadequate, so the housing rusts. If moisture gets in, the insulation can fail, and the consequence is increased fire risk. The alert also names a symptom a buyer can notice straight away: after switching off, the car may fail to restart.

2) Loosely fixed cell module (2021 build). If a cell module is not tightened enough, vibration while driving can loosen the connection. The increased contact resistance heats up at that point, which is also a fire risk.

Both campaigns are free of charge, but they are only worth something if they were carried out. The housing corrosion cannot be inspected from outside either: you have to ask the franchised dealer by VIN.

One thing belongs to this but not to the campaigns: the EQC battery is actively cooled and heated by a water-glycol circuit, is made of 384 pouch cells and weighs roughly 650 kg. Active thermal management is better for degradation: the EQC is not the passively cooled e-Golf case.

What to check

  • Ask the franchised dealer by VIN whether both battery campaigns were carried out: the 2019 corrosion one and the 2021 cell module one are separate items
  • Ask for the service history: any sign of housing replacement or repair, or a cell module retightening
  • Try restarting after switching off: according to the EU alert an insulation fault can prevent it

The bolt of the front-axle differential gear may not meet the durability specification and could break. As a result, fragments of the bolt could block the differential gear and hence the front wheels. This could affect the control over the vehicle and increase the risk of an accident. In addition, the gear casing could be damaged and oil could leak onto the road, posing a risk to the following traffic.

The wiring harness for the steering control device may have been damaged during the production process and can allow moisture to ingress into the control unit. This may lead to the loss of electric steering support, increasing the risk of accident. Moreover, a short circuit of the damaged wiring harness can occur, leading to increased risk of fire.

The housing of the high voltage battery may corrode due to inadequate corrosion protection. As a result, moisture could penetrate the battery and cause an isolation failure, leading to increased risk of fire. In addition, it may be impossible to restart the vehicle once the engine has been switched off.

The high-voltage battery may not meet specifications. If a cell module is not screwed tight enough, the connection could be loosened by vibrations while in motion. The electrical resistance of the connection could increase and the temperature could rise in this area, creating a risk of fire. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz AG has found that, in certain EQC (BR 293) vehicles, the wiring harness for the electric steering may have been damaged during the assembly process. This could lead to an ingress of water into the wiring harness and thus, over time, into the steering control unit. As a result, the power steering could fail spontaneously, even during driving, increasing the risk of an accident. The product does not comply with the requirements laid down in the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
