The heat pump is the key to winter range: without it the car heats with resistance heating, which uses far more energy. According to the reports it fails at 15,000 to 25,000 km: it does not engage properly, consumption rises by as much as 20 per cent, noise comes from the compressor, and it heats poorly in the cold.

In summer nothing shows on a test drive, but in winter it can take away a quarter of the range. The heat pump was an option: if the car does not have one, that is not a fault, but you need to know about it.

What to check

  • Ask first whether the car has a heat pump at all (it was an option)
  • Turn the heating to maximum and watch how long it takes to warm up
  • Listen for compressor noise from the engine bay while heating

The reports mention recurring electrical door faults above 20,000 km: the central locking does not open or close every door, the window regulator does not respond first time, or the rear windows still move the front ones after the touch switch has been toggled. The symptom is often intermittent: it typically appears in the cold and on the first start.

This is rarely a loss of value. But an intermittent fault will most likely not appear on the test drive. That is why you have to ask about it specifically and look for it in the service book, rather than waiting for it to show itself.

What to check

  • Open and close every door separately, with the key and from the handle too
  • Try all four windows, and the rear ones after pressing the toggle switch as well
  • Try again 10 minutes after locking: waking from sleep is the weak point

The battery management requires regular calibration and software updates; the reports mention calibration every 10,000 to 15,000 km. If it is missed, the displayed state of charge and range drift away from reality, and fast charging cuts out early at the charger: sometimes even on cars under 10,000 km.

Because of the false display the range test misleads you, and fast charging that cuts out makes the car unusable on a long trip. The fix is typically software, so it is cheap, but only if you know about it.

What to check

  • Ask at the workshop whether the latest drivetrain software has been installed
  • If you can, try a real fast charge and watch whether it runs through
  • Compare the displayed and the real range on the test drive

cheap repair1

An electric car has a 12 volt battery too, and according to the reports this is the part that fails most often. If it goes flat or weakens, the car shows random electrical faults, does not wake from sleep, or refuses to charge at all: the main traction battery can be full and still nothing starts. Behind it there is often not the battery itself but the DC/DC converter, which should feed it from the high voltage circuit. The reports give 25,000 to 35,000 km.

The symptom (will not start, will not charge) is far more frightening than the cause. The cheap 12 V battery is often mistaken for an expensive traction battery fault.

What to check

  • Ask specifically: has it ever failed to wake up, or failed to start charging
  • Check whether a 12 V battery has already been replaced, and how many times
  • After locking it, wait 10 minutes, then open it with the remote: slow waking is suspect

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
