5 important faults

The light, magnesium cased MQ200 and the MQ250, sized for higher torque, are the most widespread manual gearboxes in the transverse engine VAG models. Both have the same two weak points, and both depend on use.

The first is the differential bearing: as it wears you first get a droning, then a whine from the thrust bearings of the output shaft. Left alone, the planetary shaft can fail and in extreme cases punch through the gearbox casing: from then on it is not a repair but a replacement.

The second is the synchros: they can start crunching at around 50,000 km with aggressive driving. This type does not like dumping the clutch or slipping it, and on a used car that is exactly what you have to listen for.

above 50,000 km

What to check

  • On the test drive with the window down, listen to the gearbox both off and on the throttle: droning or whining is suspect
  • Shift up and down quickly, especially into 2nd and 3rd: crunching means synchro wear
  • Try engaging 1st and reverse when cold: resistance here means wear

The high pressure fuel pump is driven by the camshaft through a cam follower. The early version got a flat follower (the `BAG` is the most affected), and it can wear through from as little as 60,000 km; if it holes, the camshaft lobe is damaged too, and the repair jumps to many times the cost. The later `BLF` got a roller follower, where it is rarer. Symptoms are hesitation, loss of power, hard starting, and a low fuel pressure fault code.

What to check

  • Ask whether the cam follower has ever been inspected: this is a routine check, and many people skip it
  • When cold, watch whether it cranks longer than usual
  • With a code reader look for fuel pressure faults

With direct injection the fuel does not wash the intake valves: the petrol goes into the cylinder, not behind the valve. The oil mist and soot arriving through the EGR and the crankcase ventilation therefore build up on the valve stem and head, and from 80,000 to 100,000 km they restrict the flow. Symptoms are hesitation, loss of power, a rough cold start and misfire. It is not a part failure: it is a consequence of the design, and therefore it comes back. Cleaning (walnut or dry ice blasting) helps for a few tens of thousands of kilometres.

What to check

  • After a cold start watch the idle: rough running and shaking point to coked valves
  • Under load at low revs watch for hesitation
  • With a code reader look for per cylinder misfire (P0300 to P0304)

The water collector tray under the windscreen (where the wiper mechanism sits) blocks up with leaves and dust. The water cannot drain, it stands, and it runs into the cabin: typically into the front footwell, often on the passenger side.

Control units and wiring harnesses run under the footwell and in the sill, and they corrode. That is where the apparently unrelated electrical faults come from. The rear washer system is a separate water ingress point on the same model.

The tray has to be cleaned out once a year, and that takes about ten minutes.

What to check

  • Open the bonnet and look into the tray under the windscreen: there should be no leaves, silt or standing water
  • Lift the carpet in both front footwells and press the felt with your palm
  • Smell the cabin: a musty smell stays even on a dry day

Surface corrosion of the rear subframe is a known phenomenon on the Mk2, mostly on cars built before 2010; the late facelift cars from 2010 to 2013 have less rust. Alongside it the sill, the wheel arch lip and the windscreen frame are the typical hot spots.

Where roads are salted in winter, exactly these places take it. Rust on the windscreen frame cannot be repaired properly without removing the windscreen.

Surface rust can be treated. Metal rusted through on a structural part is a structural fault.

What to check

  • On a lift or over a pit, go over the rear subframe: is it surface rust, or metal flaking off in scales?
  • Run your finger along the lower lip of the sills, behind the plastic trim too
  • Look at the inner lip of all four wheel arches

A thermal overload can lead to an insufficient earth connection and interrupt the current flow to components in the ABS/ESC control unit. This could lead to the vehicle stability control function not working when required.

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
