MEB: heat pump failure
expensiveThe heat pump is the key to winter range: without it the car heats with resistance heating, which uses far more energy. According to the reports it fails at 15,000 to 25,000 km: it does not engage properly, consumption rises by as much as 20 per cent, noise comes from the compressor, and it heats poorly in the cold.

In summer nothing shows on a test drive, but in winter it can take away a quarter of the range. The heat pump was an option: if the car does not have one, that is not a fault, but you need to know about it.
What to check
- Ask first whether the car has a heat pump at all (it was an option)
- Turn the heating to maximum and watch how long it takes to warm up
- Listen for compressor noise from the engine bay while heating
