In May 2018 it emerged that in the view of the German federal motor transport authority (KBA), Daimler had used an illegal defeat device in the exhaust after treatment of the Vito 1.6 litre diesel (OM 622) to the Euro 6 standard.

The KBA therefore ordered a recall on 6,300 vehicles, of which 1,372 were in Germany.
This is the smallest diesel in the W447 Vito/V-Class range, and it often reaches the used market after fleet use. Whether the software update was done cannot be read from the registration documents: only the franchised dealer can tell you, by VIN.
This is not the affair of the larger 2.1 (OM651) or the later 2.0 (OM654). Those have separate campaigns with different numbers. This covers only the 1.6 OM622.
What to check
- Check which engine is fitted: this applies only to the 1.6 litre OM622 (badged as Vito 109/111/114 CDI)
- Ask the franchised dealer by VIN whether the KBA recall applies, and whether it was carried out
- On an imported car with a fleet history, ask for the German service history
