The Cupra versions get a firmer, lowered suspension, wider tyres and 18 to 20 inch wheels from the factory. That has three consequences, and all three can be looked at during a viewing.

The rear tyre wears out first on its inner edge, and the reason for that is the factory camber together with the heavy loads. The wear is not visible on the outer face of the tyre, so you have to reach in by hand under the inner shoulder of the rear wheel.

On the VZ versions the brake discs and pads wear quickly, above 30 000 miles, that is above roughly 48 000 kilometres. The height of the lip on the disc and the thickness of the pad can be measured.

On cars fitted with adaptive dampers, damper faults appear above 50 000 miles, that is above roughly 80 000 kilometres. This can be screened by going through the drive modes: if there is no noticeable difference between Comfort and Sport, that points to the damper. Replacing an adaptive damper costs an order of magnitude more than a conventional one.

above 48,000 km

What to check

  • Reach in under the inner shoulder of the rear wheel: that is where the tyre goes first
  • Check the tread depth on all four tyres and how even the wear is
  • Have the lip of the brake disc and the thickness of the pad measured, especially on a VZ version

In the EA211 the water pump and the thermostat are one plastic module, and the pump is driven not by the timing belt but by a separate toothed belt behind the exhaust camshaft. There are usually two problems with it: the plastic housing warps or cracks (slow coolant loss, a sweet smell, rising temperature), or the drive belt ages (a chirping noise, then an engine left with no cooling). The housing is particularly sensitive if oil reaches it: for example from a leaking crankcase ventilation. The module has to be replaced whole: dismantling it warps it in itself.

What to check

  • Check the level in the expansion tank, and ask whether it needs topping up
  • After a cold start smell the engine bay: a sweet smell means coolant
  • Look for dried, whitish pink deposits on the exhaust side of the cylinder head

The seven speed dry DSG often starts shifting hesitantly as early as 30,000 to 50,000 km: it does not shift smoothly, sometimes it cannot find the gear, and it jerks worst in slow, congested traffic. The cause is wear of the clutch pack and the mechatronics unit. Many people skip the oil change because they believe it is a lifetime fill, and most DSG faults come from that.

What to check

  • On the test drive pull away slowly several times, imitating congestion: that is when the jerking appears
  • Watch the 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 shifts cold and warm
  • Rolling gently from standstill, watch for shuddering: that is clutch wear

comfort3

At low revs, mostly when cold and in the lower gears, the engine jerks; in extreme cases it stalls in a roundabout or at a junction. The cause of the phenomenon is the lean mixture used to heat the catalytic converter quickly, so it is software in origin. The maker released an update in March 2020, whose effectiveness owners judge differently.

What to check

  • Pull away with a cold engine and watch the first 2 to 3 kilometres at low revs, in 2nd and 3rd
  • On a manual, try pulling away slowly on a slope: that is where it shows
  • Ask whether the March 2020 software update was done

The infotainment system restarts on its own, the screen turns black, it flickers, and it happens that the audio system goes silent. Instability of CarPlay and Android Auto comes with it, and faults in the emergency call function as well.

This is not an isolated case: the maker's own update log names these same things over four rounds. The April and August 2022 packages still improved general stability, the July 2023 one the emergency call and the restarting, the September 2023 one the black screen and the loss of the audio system, and the September 2025 one the restarting, the black screen and the flickering.

One thing matters particularly at a purchase. The 2025 package (MOI3_EU_SE_1988, under another designation OUN1) is at the same time a precondition for further updates arriving over the air. If it is not installed, the car will not receive the next fixes by itself either, and it has to go to a workshop for them.

The fault shows on the screen and on the comfort functions, and the drivetrain is not affected. If the screen freezes on the test drive, holding the volume control down for ten to fifteen seconds restarts it: that also shows that this is a software fault, not a broken screen.

What to check

  • Ask which software version is installed: without the OUN1 package there are no further over-the-air updates
  • Go through the menus on the screen: it should not freeze or flash black
  • Restart the car twice and watch whether the system restarts on its own

On the MQB evo generation the MIB3 touchscreen freezes, restarts on its own, and sometimes stays black. In the What Car? survey, 59 per cent of 8Y A3 owners reported a fault, and 44 per cent of those concerned the infotainment. Volume and temperature are set on touch sliders instead of physical buttons, and if the system hangs you cannot adjust them while driving either.

The maker released several software updates. Many cases are resolved by them, but not all. The update is free and fault finding is not, so before you buy, check whether the latest version has been installed.

What to check

  • Switch the system on and let it run for at least 10 to 15 minutes during the test drive
  • Try everything: navigation, Bluetooth, phone mirroring, reversing camera, radio
  • Set the volume and the climate with the slider: does it hang, is the response delayed

cheap repair1

The per cylinder ignition coil of these direct injection, turbocharged petrol engines fails. According to the Haynes service material this and similar simple electrical faults account for roughly eighty per cent of workshop visits.

In cold, damp weather, on startup, the engine runs unevenly, misfires under acceleration, and the engine warning light flashes or stays on. Do not keep driving with the light flashing: the unburnt fuel destroys the catalytic converter.

What to check

  • Start with a cold engine and watch the first half minute: a rough idle or shaking is suspect
  • On the test drive load the engine at low revs with a lot of throttle: the misfire shows then
  • A flashing engine warning light calls for stopping immediately

Information, not an expert opinion

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
