In these diesels BMW put the timing chain at the back of the engine, on the gearbox side. The chain, the guides and the tensioner wear early. The symptom is a metallic rattle on a cold start that quietens once warm.

The engine or the gearbox has to come out for the replacement, so the labour is a multiple of the parts cost. If the chain breaks or jumps, the engine is badly damaged inside, and the repair is an engine rebuild.

The problem is worst on engines built between March 2007 and March 2011, and the ones before early 2009 are the worst of all. The maker handled it under a service campaign in several European markets, but in the United Kingdom there was no formal recall. "It was never recalled" does not mean the chain is fine.

According to the German technical press the fault affects the whole N47 series and every power output, inspection is advised from 100,000 km, and factory revisions closed the matter around 2013, so cars built after 2013 are in a significantly better position. Stretching is typically preceded by a distinct rattle.

between 100,000 and 200,000 km

What to check

  • Insist on a cold start: the car should stand overnight, and the seller must not start it before you arrive
  • At the moment of starting, stand behind the engine (on the gearbox side) and listen to the first 3 to 5 seconds
  • A metallic rattle from the back of the engine calls for immediate expert inspection: this is not "diesel noise"

The heart of the four wheel drive in the longitudinal engine BMW X models (X3, X5 and the X1 E84) is the ATC transfer case. It has two faults, and you can feel both while driving.

The first is wear of the clutch pack and the fluid: in a slow, tight corner (a car park, a roundabout) the car jerks and "hops", as if the drive grabbed and let go. You can also get a jerk when pulling away on a slope. The second is the plastic actuator gear: the position signal is lost, the brake, ABS and 4x4/DSC lights come on together on the dash, and a clicking is audible from the transfer case when you switch the ignition off.

Workshops often propose a full transfer case replacement straight away. But the plastic gear can be replaced on its own, and the wrong tyre size or a mixed set of tyres also imitates the jerking, because the transfer case then slips continuously. So clear up the tyres and the fault code first, before you pay for a transfer case replacement.

between 72,000 and 175,000 km

What to check

  • In a slow, tight corner (a car park) watch for jerking, binding and a "skipping" feel
  • When pulling away on light throttle, can you feel the drivetrain jerk
  • Watch the dash: 4x4, ABS, DSC and brake lights together point at the actuator

The ZF eight speed automatic (BMW Steptronic 8HP family) has two faults, and you can feel both.

The first is the mechatronics unit: the valve body and the control electronics in one. If the solenoids or the pressure regulation weaken, the gearbox jerks, the D/R engagement is delayed, it logs a gear ratio fault code, and finally drops into limp mode (often staying in 2nd or 3rd).

The second, and often misdiagnosed, is the connector sleeve of the mechatronics unit: the O-ring of the plastic sleeve ages, and ATF leaks from the side of the housing, exactly where the wiring harness enters. This is easy to mistake for a rear crankshaft seal. The trail starts from the driver's side of the housing, not from the clutch side.

On cars built in 2023 there was also a separate safety recall for a welding fault in the mechatronics unit. That is not the same as the wear related sleeve and the valves.

Check the fluid level, the area around the sleeve and the fault codes first; do not accept a "full gearbox replacement" quote straight away.

above 120,000 km

What to check

  • On the test drive watch for delayed D/R engagement, a jerk when shifting, and limp mode (a stuck gear)
  • Look at the driver's side of the gearbox housing where the wiring harness enters: an ATF trail from the sleeve is suspect
  • Do not confuse it with a rear crankshaft seal leak: the direction of the trail decides

The connecting rod and main bearings run out, and the cause is the factory oil pump: it is undersized and does not deliver enough oil volume at idle and at low revs. BMW specifies 1.2 bar of oil pressure at idle at operating temperature, but on engines with mileage it falls below that, and the bearing shell is no longer adequately lubricated with that much. Bearing damage is reported between 130 000 and 200 000 kilometres, but it is always preceded by a longer period with low oil pressure.

The most important thing to know is that the control unit does not signal this: no lamp comes on for low oil pressure, and no fault code is stored either. The symptom is a quiet ticking at idle and a metallic noise under load, and at the rod bearing this is often explained by something else. It can be measured, though: a workshop connects a gauge and reads the real pressure at idle at operating temperature, and below 1.2 bar the engine is running in the period that causes the damage.

The length of the oil change decides matters on this engine. A change between 10 000 and 20 000 kilometres protects the bearing, the long factory interval does not. If the main bearing turns, the crankshaft is damaged too, and the upper half of the main bearing bed is aluminium while the lower is steel, so repairing the crankcase is difficult, and the block often goes out cracked and beyond repair. As prevention an uprated oil pump exists, with larger gears and its own pressure regulator, between 800 and 1150 euros, without fitting.

between 130,000 and 200,000 km

What to check

  • Have the oil pressure measured with a gauge at operating temperature at idle: below 1.2 bar is dangerous
  • Do not wait for a lamp or a fault code: the control unit does not signal this fault
  • Listen to the engine warm: a quiet ticking at idle, a metallic noise under load

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024-2026 X3 sDrive30i, X3 30 xDrive, and X3 M50 xDrive vehicles. The steering spindle may have been incorrectly attached to the steering column.

Risk: An incorrectly attached steering spindle can lead to a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the steering connection and replace hardware or replace the spindle and column, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 8, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning October 2, 2026.

The RSW22 starter with reinforced water tightness (RWT) may experience increased abrasion of the magnetic contact, causing deposits to build up at the lowest point inside the relay. These deposits may increase relay contact resistance, leading to starting failures or short circuits. If a short circuit occurs, either when attempting to start the vehicle or while driving due to vibration-related movement of the deposits, it could cause a thermal event and increase the risk of fire. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2025-2026 X3 vehicles. While the vehicle is stationary, unexpected steering wheel movement (rotation) may occur.

Risk: Unintended steering wheel movement while the vehicle is stationary increases the risk of an injury and on the road, a crash.

Remedy: The steering system software will be updated, free of charge, either over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer. Owner notification letters were mailed February 6, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning February 2, 2026.

We write the descriptions, and we put the source next to them. A person reviews them before they go out. They are still information, not a technical expert opinion.

  • A fault on the list does not mean the car you are looking at has it.
  • A fault missing from the list does not mean the model is fault-free. Write-ups are made model by model. Not all of them are done.
  • You decide whether to buy. This is no substitute for an inspection. That needs a workshop and a history check.
